Wiggle are a leading global online retailer of outdoor and sporting goods and due to massive expansion in 2014 decided to relocate its warehouse from Portsmouth to a larger premises within the Citadel Logistics Centre in Wolverhampton. The new warehouse covers an area of 300,000 sqm and due to the excellent relationship already in place, 2Teck were invited by Wiggle’s directors to provide a complete design and build solution for all of the electrical power, lighting, network cabling, wi-fi, air conditioning, fire alarm and lightning protection systems in the warehouse and internal offices.
First stage of this contract was to discuss requirements and specifications for the warehouse and offices with the Wiggle team and to provide a detailed set of CAD drawings and a schedule of installation. 2Teck’s in house electrical management team completed the design and once all aspects were defined and agreed the site temporary supplies and enablement works began, with electrical power and lighting systems installed to allow all contractors to work effectively and safely. This was an enormous undertaking in itself but essential for the project to be completed efficiently.
Once the enablement works were complete, the main installation began, overseen by a dedicated 2Teck project manager and on-site foreman with a team of over 20 electrical engineers every day. In addition to the high level segregated containment, a new high level 3 phase busbar system was installed for the majority of the 1000 Thorn LED light fittings which are used for high bay, low bay and rack illumination. We specified these energy saving LED light fittings as they have integrated occupancy sensors making them even more efficient resulting in substantial cost savings for the customer. An external LED flood lighting system was also installed for the loading bays, car park and site perimeter enhancing security and safety throughout.
The main 1600 amp incoming electrical supply was distributed via multiple panel boards to local distribution boards all of which are protected by a surge protection system. Local electrical supplies were then installed for all of the fork lift chargers, goods lifts, conveyors, offices and the external pump house that supplies the fire suppression system.
The new Wiggle warehouse relies heavily on the latest technologies and 2Teck’s communication division deployed a resilient IT network consisting of a purpose built main server room with multiple network cabinets connected via diversely routed fibre optic links. Approximately 600 Cat6 network outlets were then installed to support the ethernet and wirelessly connected IT equipment, picking systems and CCTV. All of the critical IT equipment in the server room is electrically backed up and protected by one of our APC UPS systems and kept cool with a Mitsubishi air conditioning system, as are multiple offices within the warehouse area.
Fire and smoke detection within such a large building is a challenge but the modern technology known as beam detection allowed us to provide a highly effective and reliable solution that ensures the £multi-million stock holding within the warehouse is fully protected.
